Moving checklist

Your moving day is a complex operation, where multiple things need to be arranged in a short amount of time. This checklist will help you planning your move. You will be able to keep overview and the move will happen smoothly. Furthermore, you can concentrate on the practical issues as they will be arranged ahead of time. This will give you time and energy to focus on the important issues, which is a reassuring feeling.

1.    The date is set

  • Make an appointment with the Euromovers partner
  • End the rental contract of your current place, or offer your current house for sale
  • Arrange mortgage
  • Move telephone connection / new telephone and internet connection
  • Inform school
  • Make arrangement with the prior residents about taking over carpeting and such
  • Get information about possible housing benefits
  • Ask your employer about the possibilities of relocation leave
  • Inform about possible reimbursement of relocation costs
  • Inform about possible tax relief of relocation costs
  • Measurements of the new place
  • Quit domestic help
  • Pick up address change messages at the postal office and send them where needed
  • Start clearing out everything that will not be moved
  • Applying for residence permit
  • Get a municipality guide and map
  • Get informed about:
    • Schools
    • Associations
    • Child care and nurseries
    • Home help
    • Social work
    • Consultation office
    • Public transport
    • Garbage system
    • Dog taxes
    • Municipal taxes and agreements

2.    Two to four weeks prior to move

  • Apply children to new school
  • Order business cards
  • Order letter papers
  • Insurance house and inventory
  • Arrange closure of electricity, gas and water in the place you are leaving
  • Arrange electricity, gas and water in the new place
  • Name tag
  • Clear everything that will not move to the new place

 3. The last two weeks prior to the move

  • Send out address change
  • Arrange care for your children during moving day
  • Arrange care for your pets during moving day
  • Inform house manager
  • Redeem savings stamps from local stores
  • Terminate PO box and arrange a new one
  • Return library books
  • Put all valuable documents and jewelry in a bank safe
  • Clear out objects that will not move of offer to sale
  • Start packing

 4. Last days prior to the move

  • Clean new house and ‘mark’ the rooms
  • Pull out carpeting, if necessary
  • Take down lamps
  • Take down curtains (except for the ones in the bedrooms)
  • Inform delivering party
  • Remove satellite dish
  • Pack everything that you do not need access to
  • Arrange simple meals for the evening prior and day of the move
  • Make sure there is enough coffee
  • Arrange household refuse
  • Remove washing machine drum security
  • Remove garden plants (in season)
  • Leave garbage containers empty and cleaned, in possible with garbage calender
  • Dispose chemicals box to the chemicals disposal point and leave empty box in the house.

4. Last days prior to the move

  • Defrost and clean refrigerator
  • Put the full freezer on the highest setting
  • Disassemble furniture
  • Take out the pendulum from your clock
  • Try to reserve parking place for the truck with your and neighbors’ cars
  • Pack last things
  • Put plants in buckets or plastic bags

 6. Moving day

  • Take down last curtains
  • Put all your keys in your carry-on luggage
  • Money and checks in carry-on luggage
  • Make sure you do not leave anything behind
  • Check meter readings
  • Close down gas and electricity (only in case no electricity is needed to keep the heating working)
  • Close water pipe (even if it is not freezing)
  • Close all windows and doors
  • Return key to house manager / new householder
  • Wave at your neighbors

 7. Arrival in the new home

  • Try to place everything in the right place directly
  • Check for possible moving damage
  • Pay your Euromover partner
  • Make one room as ‘livable’ as possible
  • Hang up curtains in bedrooms
  • Let refrigerator and freezer rest for one day before turning them on
  • Remove washing machine drum security

 8. After the move

  • Unpack
  • Fasten name tag
  • Report possible moving damage (see moving requirements art. 13)
  • Contact Euromovers for an appointment for the moving boxes pick up
  • Report any possible damage to house manager
  • Introduce yourself to the new house manager
  • Within 5 days of your move, inform municipality of your address change
  • Pick up the key to your new PO box

What information you need about the new house

  • Height, length and width measurements of all rooms and spaces
  • Width of all doors
  • Height and width of the windows
  • Possibility to install sun protection
  • Height of wall underneath windows
  • Available space of the refrigerator
  • Available space for the stove
  • Place of antenna connection and where you want to place radio and TV
  • Amount and location of electricity sockets
  • Rules and regulations of the house manager
  • Rules with regard to antennas
  • When the garbage will be picked up
  • Whether the house is connected to the gas net
  • Last time chimney is cleaned
  • Whether there is a connection for electric cooking
  • Whether pets are allowed
  • Can the moving truck drive up to the front door?
  • The presence of a lifting beam
  • The presence of a moving lift
  • The possibility of using a moving lift
